Javier Hernandez says he could leave West Ham United – Newcastle were interested in him last summer.

While the 2017-18 season is only just behind us, Newcastle United’s search for a striker appears to be already firmly underway.

After seeing two offers rejected in January, the Magpies are reportedly ready to try their luck again with Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen. Tammy Abraham, who turned down a move to the North East in favour of Swansea City last summer, has also been linked.

And keeping with the trend of considering targets who may have once passed them by – Toon legend Alan Shearer claimed last December Mike Ashley had the Mexican “ready to come in” last summer – could Newcastle be tempted to once again look at Javier Hernandez?

The former Manchester United striker has already signalled his intention to leave the London Stadium after just one season, having struggled to hold down a consistent first-team role under David Moyes.

His eight Premier League goals fell short of expectation and as a result, the 29-year-old’s stock has fallen somewhat – despite that haul being level with Newcastle’s top goal Ayoze Perez scorer having started 12 fewer games.

Not taking into account a disruptive first season back in England, Hernandez’s potent record in front of goal speaks for itself and whatever the club saw in him last summer is surely still there.

While his stock may have dropped, a healthy World Cup campaign in Russia next month could certainly remedy that. While much may depend on who West Ham United bring in as their next manager, any prospective buyers would be advised to move quickly before he climbs into the shop window in Russia.
