Should Manchester United have signed Tottenham’s Davinson Sanchez instead of Victor Lindelof?

Jose Mourinho has had a tremendous transfer record at Manchester United so far, with nearly all of his signings looking like working out successfully.

The one with a big question mark is £30 million addition Victor Lindelof, who looked very shaky in pre-season and is yet to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils.

There is plenty of time for the Swede to prove himself, but it may have been smarter to take a proven commodity like Michael Keane, who signed with Everton.

Another player who moved for big money was outstanding centre-back Davinson Sanchez, who became Tottenham’s record buy from Ajax.

Sanchez looked impressive for Colombia this week in an international friendly against Brazil, when he kept a forward line of Roberto Firmino, Neymar and Gabriel Jesus quiet, with the Selecao’s only goal coming from a long range Willian strike.

The centre-back is a player Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is well aware of, picking him out as a potential weak point for Ajax in their Europa League preparation.

He told the Tribuna Expresso, Mourinho this summer told students at the University of Lisbon: “We let them go out to play, but blocking the right center, De Ligt, and letting the ball go to the left, Sánchez, who had more difficulties.”

Mourinho’s United beat Ajax 2-0 and won the Europa League final, and his judgement of Sanchez likely made his mind up not to entertain a transfer for him this summer.

Lindelof was signed just a month later but is evidently taking a while to settle in.

Sanchez is hoping to make his first Spurs start this month after signing just a fortnight ago and hopes to establish himself in a three man defence along with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.

The Colombian is very highly rated, even if not by Mourinho, and over the coming seasons the United boss’ choice of Lindelof instead could prove to be a big error.

The ‘Special One’ has not made a misstep in the transfer market yet since joining United, and will hope that the Lindelof over Sanchez move does not prove to be his first.
