Could Monk and Guardiola change Delph’s mind about a Leeds return in the summer?

The Manchester City midfielder would be the perfect midfield signing for Leeds United if they return to the top flight.

Despite bookmakers Ladbrokes recently making Leeds United the favourites to sign Fabian Delph, and the midfielder struggling for game time at current club Manchester City, he has told the Express that he is happy where he is.

But could his stance change in the summer?

After all, City are only likely to strengthen in the close season and if Leeds earn promotion back to the top flight a return for Delph could suddenly be a tantalising prospect.

“Whenever I’m needed, whenever I’m called upon, I’ll be raring to go to give 100 per cent like I do every day,” Delph recently told the Express. “Hopefully I’ll get that chance.”

But what if he doesn’t? What if Pep Guardiola continues to overlook him in the short term and strengthens to such a degree in the near future that Delph is pushed even further to the periphery than he is now?

If it becomes clear Delph is not needed, then could be the perfect time for Leeds to make their move.

The Whites may not need the 27-year-old for now, with the likes of Liam Bridcutt and Ronaldo Vieira impressing at Elland Road in the second tier. But strength in depth and experience in key areas will be vital if and when Garry Monk’s side returns to the Premier League.

Given his age and his history, Delph would then be the perfect acquisition, and it could be the decisions of two managers, not just one, that ultimately seal his fate.
