Daniel Arzani is reportedly out for the rest of the season after already enduring a difficult start to life with Celtic.
After only featuring once since the end of September, Mikey Johnston was handed a boost this week when it was announced that he has signed a new contract that is set to keep him at Celtic until 2023, according to the club’s official website.
Johnston is an extremely promising talent. And the Hoops fans were treated to glimpses of his potential during the early stages of the campaign when Brendan Rodgers handed him a number of opportunities on the left-wing.
The length of the deal certainly highlights how high Celtic’s hopes for the 19-year-old are. And perhaps the terms also hint that Rodgers could be eyeing bringing the teenager back into the senior side on a more regular basis over the coming months.
If Johnston does get that chance and impresses however, perhaps it may be fair to say that he could end up adding to Daniel Arzani’s problems at Parkhead.
Arzani has endured a difficult time since arriving on loan from Manchester City. Rodgers understandably took a cautious approach with the Australia international after he arrived without a pre-season under his belt.
And when he did finally get his chance, he had to be stretchered off shortly after coming on with what has proved to be a season-ending injury, as reported by The Scottish Sun. It was a devastating setback for a player who undoubtedly looked bright and should have had an assist on his debut.
Arzani is currently set to be at Celtic for next season also, so he will be desperate to make up for lost time upon his return. But unfortunately for the wide-man, he will be unable to prevent Johnston potentially leaping ahead of him in the pecking order if he gets another go in the team over the coming months.
