“For us to turn round and have people like Clint Hill on the bench and to have that quality right the way from front to back is very pleasing,” Mark Warburton told the Glasgow Evening Times earlier in the week.

Now, according to GetWestLondon, the former Brentford boss is mulling over the prospect of allowing him to return to former club QPR in January.

Hill may be just 14 months from 40, and with just 10 Scottish Premiership appearances under his belt this season, but he possesses in abundance what the majority of the Rangers squad is lacking. Experience.

Rangers' Clint Hill

2016/17 is Hill’s 20th season in professional football during which he has featured in the top four divisions of English football, sampling the sweet taste of promotion, the bitterness of relegation and everything else in between.

Meanwhile, barring the evergreen Kenny Miller, the frozen out Philippe Senderos (below) and the injured Niko Kranjcar, the rest of the Rangers squad is under 30 years of age with many of Warburton’s key players barely out of their 20s.

For the majority of the club’s summer signings, such huge expectations will still be a rather daunting prospect. For others, meanwhile, those who have spent more than a few months at Ibrox, the top flight is a huge step up in quality while fighting Aberdeen and Hearts for a European berth while being forced to watch Celtic streak to the title is not for the faint-hearted.

Therefore, Rangers need all the experience they can get if they are to lay down an effective marker this season. And you’d think the leadership of Hill, both on the field and in the dressing room, would have proved invaluable as the campaign progresses.
