The Tottenham Hotspur youngster deserves a chance in the FA Cup third round.

England's Marcus Edwards

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been getting very excited about Marcus Edwards for quite some time, after the young midfielder excelled at various age groups and ultimately made his way into the club’s pre-season squad this summer.

It was there that the 17-year-old finally appeared for the first-team, but could he be set for his first competitive start this January?

Tottenham fans eager to see what he can do may feel that is not soon enough. However, such are the challenges for the club this season – as they fight for the Premier League and European progression – that it is highly unlikely Edwards will be given a start before then.

Edwards came off the bench in the EFL Cup clash with Gillingham back in September but injury has robbed him of a chance to build on that, and the next available shot could be when Tottenham take to the field for their FA Cup third round match on the 7th or 8th of January.

We do not yet know who Tottenham will face in that encounter, but assuming it is lower-league opposition the timing would be perfect for Edwards to get the start his fans have been waiting for.

That means Edwards could have 51 more days to wait before he gets the chance to kick off a competitive Tottenham match for the first time.

The future looks bright for Edwards and this could be the season when he shows the glimpses of what, one day, should become regular occurrences.
