Everton could be without Gylfi Sigurdsson against Cardiff City.

Everton return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, as they host Cardiff City at Goodison Park following the end of 2018’s final international break.

The Toffees have been in good form of late, winning four of their last six games, and went into the break with a 0-0 draw at Chelsea as Yerry Mina made a superb debut for the club.

However, the Colombian’s performance has presented Silva with a real dilemma, as he only came into the side because of Kurt Zouma’s ineligibility against parent club Chelsea.

Zouma is now back, but Mina starred and Michael Keane has been superb this season, meaning Silva has a real dilemma on his hands when it comes to picking his defence.

Silva has though hinted recently to the Liverpool Echo that he has wanted to play a three-man defence but didn’t have the players to do it over the summer, and now he certainly does with Keane, Zouma and Mina at the club.

Picking the right time to do it is another problem, but with star playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson a major injury doubt to face Cardiff this weekend, now could be the time to do it.

Jordan Pickford can play behind the back line of Zouma, Mina and Keane, with Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman as wing backs and Andre Gomes – a doubt himself – potentially partnering Idrissa Gueye in the middle.

With Sigurdsson out and Ademola Lookman struggling, using Bernard and Theo Walcott either side of Richarlison may be the best bet, and the stars may just be aligning for Silva to finally play a three-man defence this weekend, solving his defensive dilemma.
