Leeds United are reportedly hoping to strengthen their goalkeeper options in the summer after a difficult year at Elland Road.

Amongst the decisions that the Leeds hierarchy can reflect that they got wrong this season, the call to replace Rob Green with Felix Wiedwald has to be up there in contention for the worst.
Green may not have been flawless during his first year at Elland Road, but he grew as the season went on and was arguably Leeds’ best player during the final months of the season when their play-off push unravelled dramatically.

Meanwhile, it would surprise many if Wiedwald got another chance in the Championship having already had two shots at being number one and making glaring mistakes on a fairly regular basis when he was between the sticks.
Andy Lonergan was hardly much better during his brief run when the German was initially dropped. And while Bailey Peacock-Farrell has been a shining light in the early stages of Paul Heckingbottom’s tenure, it would surely be a huge error not to add to the options during the summer.

Unsurprisingly, The Sun reported at the weekend that Heckingbottom’s priority for the next window is to sign a new goalkeeper. And amongst the stoppers that Leeds must consider during the coming months is Manchester City’s Angus Gunn.
Gunn has been hugely impressive out on loan with Norwich City this season and appears destined to play in the Premier League at some stage in the very near future.
The Sun reported last month (18th February 2018; page 60) that Manchester City want to loan the 22-year-old out to a top flight side next season. But if they cannot find any takers at the highest level, then Leeds should definitely try their luck in the hope that they can convince City into sending him to Elland Road for a year.
Gunn has rarely let Norwich down this season despite their similarly underwhelming position in the second tier, and Leeds are crying out for the kind of keeper that they can rely on to play 46 games without too many problems.
At the very least, Leeds should attempt to make a loan bid for Gunn in the summer as with him and Peacock-Farrell – and a handful of talented academy stoppers coming through, in the ranks – the club should have enough depth to ensure that they do not need to call upon Wiedwald again.
