With Mackay’s odds of replacing Mark Warburton at Rangers cut to 7/2, could the Crystal Palace striker follow him to Ibrox?
Former Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay
It’s fair to say Rangers fans did not take well to Malky Mackay’s name being linked with the club’s vacant manager’s job.
Mackay, a former Celtic player, is as short as 7/2 with bookmakers Sky Bet to replace Mark Warburton at Ibrox, although an appointment appears far from imminent.
Hiring the 45-year-old could have its benefits, however, thinking outside the box.
Mackay was once one of English football’s brightest young bosses, helping to stabilise Watford and take Cardiff City into the Premier League for the very first time.
And it was in South Wales that the Scot first came into contact with a player whose expiring contract looks set to make him one of this summer’s most pursued.
In his first 12 games for Mackay’s Cardiff side, Fraizer Campbell scored seven goals as the Bluebirds soared to the 2012-13 Championship title.

And though Mackay was sacked the following December for reasons I shalln’t be going into, Campbell has remained a top flight player ever since, moving on to Crystal Palace in summer 2014.
Now 29, and having struggled for game time in recent campaigns, the predatory former Manchester United striker might not be for much longer, however.
And if Mackay gets the job, a move to Rangers might just seem an appealing option.
Should Glasgow Rangers sign Fraizer Campbell this summer?
