Leeds United sold the midfielder prior to their new manager’s appointment.
Leeds United fans cannot quite believe Marcelo Bielsa is their new manager, with the Argentine tactician set to oversee a very exciting season at Elland Road. But one wonders how one of their former players will be feeling having left the club just days before the new coach’s appointment.
Madger Gomes only arrived at Leeds last summer yet he left the club for French side Sochaux having made only two EFL Cup appearances for the Whites.
He impressed in those outings, as he did in last year’s pre-season matches when his performances suggested he was tailor-made for Leeds’ senior side.
Things did not quite work out this season, but that does not mean he would not have impressed Bielsa if he had stuck around.
Gomes was previously on the books at Anfield and his versatility means he is equally comfortable as an attacking midfield or operating on either wing.
Bielsa’s philosophy could have ultimately seen Gomes operate wide in a front three or as the ‘1’ in his 3-3-1-3 formation.
It is easy to dismiss Gomes due to his lack of game time last season and the fact that Bielsa is expected to bring in plenty of new players this summer.
However, the Spaniard has the talent to ultimately succeed and one wonders if he will live to regret not sticking around at Leeds and learning from one of the most innovative managers in the game.
