According to Dutch website Voetbal Primeur, Leeds United are prepared to let midfielder Mateusz Klich leave on loan in January, but could that ultimately lead to a chance for youngster Madger Gomes?

Klich has barely got a sniff at Elland Road this season, with Kalvin Phillips, Eunan O’Kane, Ronaldo Vieira and Conor Shaughnessy all ahead of him in the pecking order. As a result, it would be no surprise if he moved on in pursuit of regular first-team football at the turn of the year.

However, his departure could open the door, albeit only slightly, for Gomes, who is a versatile midfielder who models his game on Steven Gerrard.

While Gomes can play as a winger, he featured in Leeds’ EFL Cup matches earlier this season in the centre of the park, and during his time at Liverpool he tried to learn all he could from the famous Reds skipper.

In an interview with liverpoolfc.com last April, Gomes said, “Gerrard is an amazing player and maybe one day I want to do one per cent the same as him but it is very difficult.”

It certainly is, but with Klich out the way, Gomes will know he has one less player to get the better of and, if injuries or suspensions strike at the business end of the campaign, the 20-year-old could yet get his chance.

The Leeds youngster is far more likely to benefit from patience than his Polish teammate, and it will be interesting to see how things play out in the months ahead.
