Tottenham Hotspur could still get their man, having seen previous bids refused for West Bromwich Albion’s Saido Berahino?
As reported by Sky Sports back in 2015, Tottenham Hotspur had two deadline day bids rejected for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, with the two clubs’ headstrong chairmen standing firm and the player left in temporary limbo when the transfer window slammed shut.
Since then, things have not gone according to plan for the forward, whose form and value have both dipped alarmingly, leaving Baggies fans to wonder if they should have cashed in when they had the chance.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, in football as in life, but with Berahino’s West Brom contract coming to an end in the summer, could Levy be about to have the last laugh?
At the time, it seemed the Tottenham supremo had finally met his match in the form of Peace, who played hardball and ultimately kept a valued player rather than taking the money.
However, if Berahino moves to Tottenham for free in just a few short months everyone will be smiling apart from Peace.
The player will finally get his apparent dream move, Spurs will have another talented striker to compete with Harry Kane and Vincent Janssen, and the North London club will have got their man for nothing more than a signing-on fee.
In contrast West Brom will lose an innately talented player for nothing, proving that sometimes the most hard-nosed of negotiators can hold out for too long…while others win when it previously seemed they had lost.
It remains to be seen how Berahino’s situation will play out at The Hawthorns and he could yet move on a cut-price deal in January. However if he waits just a few months more, he could finally get the transfer he was said to be holding out for earlier in his career, at which point he will have a massive point to prove.
