Aston Villa want a new defensive midfielder. Could they look to raid Leeds?

Aston Villa visit Leeds United this weekend hoping to move to within a point of the Whites in the Championship table.

One player who will not be involved for the home side is midfielder Toumani Diagouraga, who has not played for Leeds since a nightmare result on the first day of the season away to QPR.

With Aston Villa prioritising a new defensive midfielder this January, according to The Mirror, the experienced Championship ace could be a cheap and available option for Steve Bruce to add some quality squad depth.

Diagouraga signed for Leeds from Brentford last January, snubbing interest from Rangers in the process.

He played a prominent role under Steve Evans but quickly fell out of favour under Garry Monk, who has preferred to promote academy talents.

The 29-year-old Frenchman has more than 100 Championship appearances under his belt, most of which came at Brentford where he was part of a side which clinched a 2014/15 play-off spot.

He has been playing under-23 football over the past few months and is a near certainty to move on in January.

With a point to prove, Diagouraga could be a smart signing for Villa and provide competition for Mile Jedinak in midfield, while allowing their array of attacking talents to flourish.
