Could Leeds owner change strategy if he feels there is no action from the Football League?
Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani is learning a few harsh lessons in his first full season in English football.
The Whites have gone backwards over the past 12 months, sitting in 13th place. They are already effectively out of the race for the play-offs.
Radrizzani recently vented his frustration with Wolves, believing they have circumvented the Football League’s spending regulations to sign players to propel them to the top of the Championship.
Leeds have spent money raised by the club from selling players and via gate receipts, but could they open themselves up to more outside investors if they believe it is more viable to do so?
Leeds fan Simon O’Rourke suggested on Twitter yesterday that the club should take the EFL’s ‘inaction’ as encouragement to go on a spending spree of their own and use their own high profile connections to bring top level players into the club.
Wolves have won their two games against Leeds this season by a combined 7-1 scoreline and their superiority has been clear.
Radrizzani has attempted to spend prudently since joining, talking about long-term plans, but the Championship is so competitive that at some stage teams really have to ‘go for it’, in the same way Wolves have this season.
Regardless of whether Wolves have done right or wrong, this season has shown that top quality players coupled with strong management bring top quality results, and Leeds’ bargain buy players also bring what you pay, mid-table mediocrity.
Radrizzani will surely realise if Leeds are to compete, they need to spend big, and if that means attracting new investors if he lacks the funds, so be it.
The Whites’ shortcomings this season suggest a major spending spree could be what’s needed to bring about a drastic upturn in fortunes. This summer is time to change it up, or settle to be prepared to make the same mistakes.
