It was reported by Brescia Oggi towards the end of last month that Leeds defender Gaetano Berardi is on Massimo Cellino’s radar this summer after arguably his best campaign yet at Elland Road.

Berardi spent much of the season on the sidelines due to injury, and his season ended in another red card that proved costly in the second-leg of the play-off semi-final, but a number of his best performances for the Whites have come during Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure.

So perhaps it is little surprise that former Leeds owner Cellino is keen to offer the Swiss the chance to return to Italy with Brescia this summer ahead of their return to Serie A.

It remains to be seen if Cellino decides to make a bid, but perhaps an offer coming in has become a little more likely with The Scottish Sun reporting that Brescia’s seven-figure bid for Barnsley’s Liam Lindsay has been rejected.

Liam Lindsay of Barnsley during the Sky Bet League One match between Barnsley and Walsall at Oakwell Stadium on September 8, 2018 in Barnsley, United Kingdom.

The Tykes – who will be facing Leeds in the Championship next season – turned down an offer of £1 million for the centre-back, and The Scottish Sun has suggested that that has opened the door for a number of second tier sides to make their own move for Lindsay.

It is not clear what the future holds for Berardi at Leeds. He remains a cult-hero, but did upset a lot of fans with the challenge he made to get sent off against Derby. And having now collected seven red cards during his time with the Whites, there are some who believe that he cannot be relied upon as a key player next season.

The faith Bielsa placed in Berardi this past season suggests that he will probably want to keep him. But perhaps Leeds should not be surprised if Brescia now decide to test their resolve to keep the 30-year-old.
