If Leeds United fail to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, it would be some surprise.
Felix Wiedwald’s ability seems to be called into question on a game-by-game basis, while Andy Lonergan fared no better when brought into the side earlier in the season – which in turn raises doubts about third-choice shot-stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
That Jon McLaughlin, the Heart of the Midlothian goalkeeper, already has offers from Championship clubs [Daily Record] ahead of the new campaign should therefore pique the attentions of Leeds fans.
McLaughlin has impressed since leaving England’s second tier [Burton Albion] to sign for Hearts last summer, and is being tipped for a Scotland call-up ahead of March’s international break, while his ties to Leeds manager Paul Heckingbottom – with whom he played at Bradford City nearly a decade ago – could move him onto the Whites’ radar.
Heckingbottom has already spoken of the difficulty his new side face in a transfer market dominated by their big-spending rivals, and landing McLaughlin for nothing would allow Leeds’ funds to be focused elsewhere.
He can’t – surely – be worse than their current options.
