Could Leeds end up with Tyler Roberts as their main striker?

Leeds United have so far failed to add a striker to their ranks.

There is little less than a month left in the summer transfer window and Leeds United are yet to really strengthen.

Lewis Baker on a season-long loan from Chelsea represents Leeds’ only bit of business so far and, rather worryingly, they have not yet signed a striker.

Plenty of talented marksmen have been linked, but transfers for Abel Hernandez and Matej Vydra look unlikely to materialise as a result of finances, which means that Britt Assombalonga, rated at £15 million [The Northern Echo], also seems unlikely to materialise.

But could a player who is yet to kick a ball for Leeds be entrusted with the task of scoring goals for the Whites next season?

Tyler Roberts joined the Elland Road club from West Brom for £2.5 million [Birmingham Mail] in January but injury meant that he had to spend the second half of last season on the sidelines.

Relying on Roberts for goals was an unthinkable situation a few short weeks ago, amid the excitement of potentially having Hernandez or Vydra – or both, depending on your optimism – arrive at Thorp Arch, but the reality is that it’s becoming slightly more realistic.

Even if they sign Jerry Mbakogu, with Gazzetta di Modena claiming this weekend that Leeds are the only club interested, Roberts still might find himself under pressure to deliver the goals, considering it would be the Nigerian forward’s first season in English football.

Of course, there is time for the Whites to pull something out of the bag regarding a marquee striker, but time is running out and the closer it comes to August 9, the more Leeds might have to accept that Roberts may be as good as it gets by way of a striker.
