Could Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson be a good option for West Ham United after his latest comments about the Premier League?

West Ham United gave their chances of playing in the Premier League again next season a significant boost last weekend by beating Southampton 3-0.

David Moyes’ side are now five points ahead of the Saints and the relegation zone with seven matches left to play and the Scot could be forgiven for having one eye on next term – if the hierarchy at the London Stadium keeps him on that is.

In fact football.london reported last month that Moyes is indeed preparing for 2018/19 and with Jose Fonte having left for China and James Collins expected to be released this summer, central defence is a priority.

Who to sign?

The same report says that Manchester United’s Chris Smalling is being considered, but perhaps someone from the Championship has just given a hint he could be an option.

That player is Pontus Jansson, who has been speaking about the “toughest” four months of his career at Leeds United having seen them drop into the bottom half of the table following a midweek defeat to Fulham.

“Of course I feel frustrated, of course I want to speak to people in this club about what the goals are,” Jansson told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“I said I had a dream to play in the Premier League but I also said that the dream for me is playing with Leeds. That’s what I said from day one.

“We have two wins in four months. To be fair, that’s ridiculous. It’s been tough for me and for others also. All you can do is go out there and try to change it.”

Jansson is clearly deeply connected to Leeds after making his switch from Torino permanent over the summer after a successful season on loan in 2016/17, but would the 27-year-old resist a move to the English top flight after these latest comments?
