The Tottenham Hotspur defender has admitted he needs to move on to play regular first-team football.

In an interview with Sky Sports Austria, Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer admitted that his future was likely to be away from White Hart Lane, but could his comments cost Spurs when it comes to a potential transfer fee?

After all, a recent story from the Sun suggested Mauricio Pochettino’s side want £20million for the centre-back, but any suitors are unlikely to pay that if they know Wimmer is seeking a move.

“We will definitely look around,” Wimmer is quoted by Sky Sports Austria. “It’s time to look for something, where the chances of regular use are again higher.”

The problem with admitting that – as obvious as it may be given his struggle for regular game time last season – is that Tottenham have now lost some of the power when it comes to negotiating a fee for the 24-year-old.

The selling club often has the upper hand when the buying club is desperate for a deal, and that is where Tottenham have often found themselves.

However, matters are not helped when a player – in this case Wimmer – comes out and basically issues a come-and-get-me plea to any side impressed by his relatively rare outings in North London.

Any club interested in Wimmer will know Tottenham only paid £4.3million when he moved from Cologne in 2015 (as reported by the Telegraph) and while Spurs chairman Daniel Levy may be keen on making a £15.7million profit in just two years, the player’s comments could make that unlikely.

In an inflated market, Tottenham will not want to lose Wimmer on the cheap, but clubs could use his comments to knock a few million off the deal.
