Tottenham Hotspur have a very exciting 17-year-old on their books.
Tottenham Hotspur head into their EFL Cup clash against Gillingham on Wednesday evening without Harry Kane, meaning that summer signing Vincent Janssen will almost certainly lead the line.
Kane’s absence could have seen a place on the substitutes’ bench for 19-year-old striker Shayon Harrison. However with the teenager side-lined through injury there could be a potential place in the match-day squad for an even younger prospect.
Kazaiah Sterling is only 17 and has featured just three times for Tottenham’s under-21s to date, scoring on his debut against Leicester City last season.
At first glance the prospect of Tottenham promoting the unproven youngster – even for a spell on the bench in the absence of Kane and Harrison – appears slim. However, needs must and Marcus Rashford had not even turned out for Manchester United’s under-21s when he got the call to start in the Europa League.
We all know how that turned out and while Tottenham have goal-scoring options in the form of Heung-min Son and Erik Lamela, they are down to the bare bones in terms of out-and-out strikers.
Sterling may be young but he is fit and available and an EFL Cup match would be the perfect chance to test him should he be needed sooner than first expected.
