Former Rangers midfielder Derek McInnes has emerged as the main contender to succeed Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox, according to reports.
McInnes, currently in charge of Rangers’ Premiership rivals Aberdeen, insisted earlier this week he is happy in his current role.
But could a move to Ibrox help the 46-year-old to finally get his hands on a player who’s so far proved elusive for the Dons?
McInnes’ side are said to have bid for Motherwell striker Louis Moult in the summer, but were knocked back and subsequently turned to Preston’s Stevie May.
But as Moult’s contract continues to wear down, Motherwell will soon have no say in the matter.
Rangers have also been linked with a move for the Englishman, who recently scored twice to dump Caixinha’s team out of the League Cup and has 11 in 17 games this season overall.
Regardless of the two clubs’ on-pitch fortunes, a club of Rangers’ stature, and with their resources, is always likely to trump Aberdeen should a transfer war ensue.
Jumping ship for Rangers, therefore, could be McInnes’ best shot at landing one of Scottish football’s top talents.
