Celtic are amongst the group of sides reportedly interested in signing Nick Powell this summer.

It was reported by TEAMtalk last week that Celtic are one of the teams chasing Wigan Athletic talisman Nick Powell in the final days of the transfer window.

It has been a fairly underwhelming window for the Hoops so far, but there is perhaps every chance that Brendan Rodgers will give the fans plenty to be pleased about in the final hours before the deadline. And it appears that Powell is one player that he has his eye on at the moment.

TEAMtalk reports that the Latics could consider letting Powell go with his contract having less than a year left to run. The 24-year-old has made an excellent start to the Championship season, scoring three and providing three assists for Paul Cook’s men.

TEAMtalk adds that Wigan want a deal worth £5 million, but could consider loaning him out to one of their Championship rivals with the future fee agreed for January. On paper however, the fact that Celtic can still buy the player straight away – and will not be coming up against Wigan anytime soon – should surely give them an advantage.

And perhaps it would be fair to suggest that Celtic’s hopes of signing Powell may have received the smallest boost from the fact that Wigan managed to strengthen their attacking options by bringing a player in from Rangers this summer.

It surprised many when Josh Windass swapped Ibrox for the DW Stadium, but the deal may leave Wigan feeling slightly better about the idea of selling Powell as Windass could be one player who potentially fills the void if the former Manchester United man leaves before the end of the month.

So if Celtic are the ones to sign Powell this summer, perhaps Brendan Rodgers may just have a small reason to thank Windass as his move may have helped pave the way for the playmaker to move on.
