You wouldn’t envy Neil Lennon or Director of Football Nicky Hammond if they have to replace left-back Kieran Tierney at Celtic this summer.

Where do you even start?

The 22-year-old is one of Europe’s most exciting young talents, but Arsenal and Napoli are keen and time will tell if Celtic can keep him in Glasgow.

The truth is that Lennon might not be able to find a long-term replacement this summer, so he might turn to his existing options and is there a surprise candidate to replace him this season?

Tierney spent a lot of time on the sidelines last season and Jonny Hayes did a very good job in his absence.

The Irishman, a winger, enjoyed a seamless transition to life at left-back when he had to and maybe, just maybe, Lennon should consider him for the role on a short-term basis.

It’s an important season for the Bhoys, who will look to go within one Premiership title of a historic 10-in-a-row, and therefore the Northern Irish boss might not be keen on playing Hayes at left-back.

But the 31-year-old has certainly proved capable of doing a job there so perhaps it isn’t a terrible shout.
