Everton have made a number of new signings this summer, but that should not detract from the exciting academy products currently pushing for first-team recognition.

One such player is Jonjoe Kenny, who made his Everton debut in the famous 3-0 victory against Norwich City back in May 2016 but is yet to make his second start for the Toffees’ first-team.

Since that emphatic victory over the Canaries that also introduced the world to Tom Davies, Kenny has had to make do with a single 12-minute cameo against Swansea City last season and a string of under-23 outings.

He is rated highly at Goodison Park, making the match day squad seven times in the last campaign and again being an unused substitute this time round against both Hadjuk Split and Chelsea.

So what chance a second competitive start when Everton face off against Sunderland in the third round of the EFL Cup later this month?

It would be the ideal opportunity for Kenny to prove his worth and stake a claim to feature in the league ahead of Mason Holgate, who has impressed in the absence of Seamus Coleman.

Koeman will know he has built a squad capable of winning silverware this season, and as a result he will not want to play a weakened side against Sunderland only to see them knocked out so early. That said, Kenny is a real talent who should excel against the Black Cats and deserves to show what he can do in 14 days…if not before.
