Could John Terry help Aston Villa sign January target Gary Cahill?

John Terry is reportedly in line for a backroom role with Aston Villa, so could his return help the Villans land one of their reported targets?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Aston Villa are considering appointing John Terry as assistant manager – and he has undoubtedly fuelled those rumours by subsequently announcing his retirement as a player.

It remains to be seen if Terry does make a return to the Villans in a backroom role, but if he does, perhaps the former Chelsea captain will be able to help the Championship side land one of their reported January targets.

It was reported by The Sun towards the end of last month that Villa have their eye on Gary Cahill, who has barely featured for the Blues this season.

Villa may well prove to be a tempting option for Cahill given his previous spell with the Villans at the start of his career, but The Sun reports that a number of Premier League sides are keen, and the defender believes that he can still make an impact at the highest level despite his lack of game-time for Maurizio Sarri’s side.

If there are Premier League offers on the table, then Villa could need an ace up their sleeve to get something across the line. And perhaps Terry could prove to be exactly that.

Cahill – who earns £130,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge, according to Spotrac – played alongside Terry for a number of years and formed a fantastic partnership with him, so linking up with him again may make Villa a more attractive option for the 32-year-old.

Working under Terry would surely not be enough of a selling point on its own to tempt Cahill into joining Villa, but given that he also may feel that he has unfinished business with the Villans, perhaps the combination of factors could give his old side a fantastic chance in the race for his signature.
