Could Joe Gomez’s ambition revive Celtic’s hopes of landing loan deal?

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was reportedly targeting a reunion with Liverpool defender Joe Gomez at Parkhead.

If Joe Gomez had hoped to force his way immediately back into the Liverpool first-team after 20 months on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury, he’d have been disappointed.

The 20-year-old defender has been fully fit since January but has only been handed sporadic chances to shine by Jurgen Klopp. Each of his three appearances came in the FA Cup, the most recent being the 2-1 home defeat to Championship Wolves.

And with Liverpool clearly hoping to enhance their defensive options in the off-season, The Express reporting they mad a £14.9 million bid for Lyon’s Emmanuel Mammana after missing out on Virgil van Dijk, it appears Gomez faces an uphill struggle at Anfield.

Therefore, the ambitions of the former Charlton Athletic youngster appear to be under threat already.

“The main thing is getting regular football,” Gomez told the Liverpool Echo. “I just want to get back to enjoying my football and playing consistently.

“I think that’s something I’ve missed over the last couple of seasons with the injury, but now it’s all in front of me. I just have to put in the work and be prepared to do it.”

Rodgers reunion?

However, with Klopp not giving the versatile Gomez as much of a sniff of Premier League football last season, a loan move may be the most logical step to revive his stuttering career.

The Sun claim that Celtic were challenging Brighton to land the England Under-21 international – though the latter appeared to have an advantage with Liverpool wanting Gomez to enhance his experience of Premier League football.

However, Gomez could thrive at Celtic Park, particularly as it would allow him to reunite with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who signed him from Charlton in 2015 and put him straight into the first-team.

Furthermore, uncertainty over Kolo Toure’s future could open a place for Gomez to battle for his favoured centre-back role. And, like Manchester City’s Patrick Roberts, Gomez could return to the Premier League in a years’ time more equipped to force his way into the first-team.
