Liverpool starlet impressed for England against Brazil.
Liverpool defender Joe Gomez was named the man of the match last night as England drew 0-0 with Brazil at Wembley and the prospect’s performance may well have got his club manager Jurgen Klopp thinking.
Klopp has frequently deployed Gomez at right-back this season in the absence of the injured Nathaniel Clyne and the 20-year-old has often impressed.
However, with Liverpool having a long-standing problem at centre-back, surely Klopp must be considering switching Gomez to the heart of the defence, at least as a temporary experiment.
Gomez has much experience of playing as a centre-back and last night he was especially effective on the right side of a back three as he helped to limit the threat of Brazil star Neymar.
Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip have lacked consistency for Liverpool, while Ragnar Klavan has also frequently been unconvincing, suggesting that moving Gomez to centre-back could be a wise move.
Such a switch would mean Klopp would have to make an alteration at right-back and the German may see it as too much of a risk to have youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold in the same back four as Gomez, who himself is still developing.
However, it is clear that something needs to change to make Liverpool more resilient at the back and Gomez demonstrated last night that he could be part of the solution.
