When Rangers announced that they had signed Glenn Middleton from Norwich City on transfer deadline day, the club suggested on their official website that the young winger was set to link up with their under-23 squad.

However, Graeme Murty has since suggested, in comments reported by the Daily Record, that Middleton has already been involved in training with the first-team following his move earlier this week.

Rangers imanager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Glenn trained with the first team on Thursday. Physically, he’s very adept but he needs to get used to his surroundings and how we play,” he said, as reported by the Record.

While Murty’s comments hint that he is still planning to take a cautious approach and not rush the 18-year-old into the first-team fold, there is arguably the perfect opportunity for the winger to make his debut for the senior side coming up on the horizon.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers’ next game sees them travel to Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership, but then they return to Scottish Cup action next weekend as they face a trip to Ayr for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ayr are currently doing well in League One this term, but it arguably represents a great chance for Murty to make a few changes, and perhaps one of the changes he should look to make involves bringing Middleton into the matchday squad and giving the starlet a few minutes.

Rangers should have enough quality at their disposal to ensure that they get through even if Middleton struggles, so giving him the stage to try and make an impact may be an extremely smart move.

It may prove too soon for the teenager, but giving him some sort of taste of first-team football may provide a clear indication of the level that he is currently at and may also help motivate him to make the most the chance he has at Ibrox.
