According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur’s move for Barcelona player Andre Gomes will be resurrected in January, but would the switch unsettle Spurs’ midfield rather than strengthen it?
Signing a player midway through a campaign is always a risk, and when you consider the midfield options already available to Tottenham, Gomes is arguably an unnecessary addition, especially when his January arrival could have a negative impact on the performances of those around him.
The emergence of Harry Winks has been one of the stories of the international break, and the 21-year-old could form a fine partnership with Eric Dier in the centre of Tottenham’s midfield for years to come.
The return from injury of Victor Wanyama and the presence of Mousa Dembele gives Spurs plenty of options, and throwing in a new signing in January who would expect his fair share of minutes but will need time to settle into the Premier League could be a risk that is simply not worth taking.
What Tottenham really need is creative midfielder to ease the pressure on Christian Eriksen, not another central player more inclined to sit back.
Gomes is not going to move from one club where he is struggling for minutes to another where the same fate awaits. But could Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino really give the player the assurances he would need to move in January with a World Cup fast approaching?
At the least, Gomes’s arrival would have a negative impact on Winks’ own development, and it would force Dier and his fellow midfielders to get used to another player’s style just when they should be hitting their stride.
There are players Tottenham would be wise to target in January, but Gomes is not one of them.
