The Aston Villa stalwart has been out of the picture for a while.

Aston Villa have a huge League Cup clash with West Midlands rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side travel to Villa Park in the hope of reaching the quarter-final of the competition.

Based on both teams’ form, it could be an absolute cracker and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Aston Villa boss Dean Smith treated the home fans to a rare sight.

James Chester has had a 2019 to forget. Yes, he was promoted with the Villans last season, but he hasn’t kicked a ball for the club since January due to injury.

As soon as he regained full fitness during the summer, a hamstring problem forced the Wales international to endure another spell on the sidelines.

That being said, Chester has been coming through Under-23 games as of late and maybe, just maybe, the visit of Wolves is a chance to make his senior comeback.

Smith hasn’t been using centre-backs Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels in this competition, instead preferring to use Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa in the middle of his defence.

But there’s a chance that the Aston Villa manager will break up that duo to accommodate Chester who, when completely fit, is a challenge to Mings and Engels in the Premier League.

Still only 30, the former Hull City star has a lot to offer Villa – and Wednesday might be a great chance to prove as much.
