Could Jack Rodwell have a chance of a return at Sunderland?

Jack Rodwell made a comeback in a development match for Sunderland yesterday.

According to a report in the Sunderland Echo, Chris Coleman would reconsider putting Jack Rodwell back into Sunderland’s first-team, if the former England international showed a willingness to return.

Rodwell has declined a chance to move away from Sunderland, after turning down their offer to pay him off and tear his contract up.

The 26-year-old has had a hugely difficult time at the Stadium of Light, and is very much a peripheral figure nowadays.

Rodwell has been kept with Sunderland’s development side, and has not expressed a willingness to play competitively again.

However, Coleman is said to be considering bringing Rodwell back – if the ex-Everton man admits to wanting a return.

And it may be that if Rodwell does return to the Sunderland first-team fold, it is as a centre-back.

Eyebrows were raised last night, when Rodwell was selected to start for the Black Cats’ development side.

Rodwell played in a back-three for Sunderland, after suggesting in an interview that he feels he would be better off at centre-back.

And while a return to Sunderland’s first-team is still considered unlikely, the door may have just opened very slightly for Rodwell to make an unexpected comeback.
