Could Heung-min Son’s Spurs return be what Christian Eriksen needs?

Christian Eriksen has not enjoyed the best start to the season with Tottenham Hotspur.

Christian Eriksen of Tottenham Hotspur arrives prior to the Premier League match between Watford FC and Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road on September 2, 2018 in Watford, United Kingdom.

Tottenham fans would probably not have believed it had they been told before the season started that they would go into the international break off the back of a run of three wins from four games that has seen Christian Eriksen fail to score a goal and only provide one assist.

The Dane is one of the most gifted players in the Premier League and has played a key role in helping Spurs establish themselves as important players in the title picture over the last few years.

However, his form at the start of this campaign has hardly captured the imagination, and his performance in the 2-1 defeat to Watford attracted plenty of criticism from his own supporters.

The international break therefore, may have come at a fantastic time for the playmaker in particular. And Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping that Spurs, over the coming couple of weeks, stumble upon whatever it is that makes Eriksen tick so superbly when he is at his best.

And perhaps the factor that helps Eriksen get back to his best could be as simple as Heung-min Son’s return from international duty with South Korea following their Asian Games triumph.

Heung-Min Son of Spurs celebrates his teams goal during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United at Wembley Stadium on January 4, 2018 in London, England.

Son’s absence has proved fantastic for Spurs in the long run as their victory at the tournament means that he will not have to complete two years of military service. But in the short-term, he has been missed.

Tottenham have started the season extremely brightly, but Son was brilliant last term so his return is still going to be a massive plus for Pochettino’s side.

Son’s involvement may allow Pochettino to revert to a system that is more familiar to Eriksen and enables the former Ajax ace to dictate play in the way that he was generally not able to at Watford.

And if nothing else, having another attacking player available may just put a little pressure on Eriksen to rediscover his magic quickly as he may be a contender to perhaps drop out of the side if Pochettino needs to reshuffle his pack to fit Son in.

With Lucas Moura looking transformed in the early stages of this season and Harry Kane unsurprisingly scoring goals, Tottenham could have something special on their hands if Son quickly rediscovers his form from last term. And with that front three ahead of him, it is difficult to imagine Eriksen having any trouble getting back on track after a somewhat lacklustre start by his standards.
