Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has said to that Nathaniel Phillips trains on an absolutely ‘exceptional level’ to BBC Sport.

Phillips did not start for Liverpool against Leicester City, as Fabinho made it back in time to play during the contest.

However, Klopp insists that he would have had no qualms with throwing Phillips into his side, as he has been so impressed by his work in training.

“My job is to find solutions and the boys need to offer solutions. We have still, centre-backs – they are all really young, that’s true,” he said.

“We have Nat [Phillips], could have played, he trains on an exceptional level. Rhys – the steps he’s made, wow. We have Billy as well.”

Liverpool may have options in central defence, but there are concerns about whether they will be able to hold up over the course of the campaign.

Without Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk Liverpool are really down to the bare bones at the back, although they coped perfectly fine against Leicester on Sunday.

The Reds took Brendan Rodgers’ side apart, as they won 3-0 and picked up an impressive victory.

Liverpool are next in action on Wednesday evening, when they take on Atalanta, and it will be interesting to see whether Phillips could be given a chance, as Klopp will surely want to keep his squad fresh.
