Newcastle United tried and failed to sign Olivier Giroud in January.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce confirmed at the time[talkSPORT] that he asked the Londoners about bringing the France international up but a move never materialised.

Fast forward six months and a new window has opened for Newcastle to get their man this time.

That’s because the Blues are set to sign Timo Werner and with Tammy Abraham already ahead of Giroud in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, his game time is bound to suffer in a big way.

It’s important for Giroud that he plays regularly next season to boost his chances of making the France squad for next summer’s European Championship.

Despite signing a new deal, the former Arsenal striker might well be tempted to leave in light of the Werner development.

Do Newcastle still want him?

He might be considered an underwhelming signing for United if Saudi Public Investment Fund complete their £300 million takeover, given the calibre of names being linked.

But yes, he would and should be a realistic target after Guillem Balague revealed last month that Financial Fair Play regulations will limit the St James’s Park club to a net expenditure of £27 million per season.

And a 33-year-old Giroud, with one year left on his contract, certainly wouldn’t break the bank.

Despite his age, the sad state of Newcastle’s strikers mean that the Frenchman – who has 80 Premier League goals in 229 games – would still be the club’s best centre-forward.
