Could Gerrard end up ruing not re-signing Jason Cummings for Rangers?

Glasgow Rangers brought Jason Cummings to Ibrox on loan last season, but decided against following the deal up this summer.

Based on the first few glimpses of Rangers under Steven Gerrard, it certainly does appear that the Englishman has made a number of smart moves in the transfer market thus far, with the defence looking a lot more stable and several exciting players brought in further forward.

However, it does appear that there is one area of the Gers squad that Gerrard needs to look at addressing, and that is his striker options. Umar Sadiq has been signed on loan, but he is still an unproven talent and it would appear that it could be a major gamble to not make any further signings with Alfredo Morelos looking short of form right now.

The transfer window is not over yet of course, so Gerrard may be able to pull off a superb deal that alleviates any concerns regarding Rangers’ striker options. But perhaps it would be fair to suggest that there is a slight danger that the Light Blues could end up ruing not pursuing another deal for Jason Cummings.

As reported by BBC Sport, Cummings joined the Gers on loan in January and there was an option to make the move permanent. Unfortunately for Cummings, he struggled to make a major impact during his time with Rangers and a further move never materialised.

The 22-year-old only showed brief glimpses of his quality during his time at Ibrox, with the undoubted high point coming in a Scottish Cup tie with Falkirk when he scored a hat-trick.

Cummings may not be the finished article by any means, and there are clearly concerns about his ability to play as a sole striker, but Rangers do seem to boast a lot of quality in attacking midfield and it would appear that whoever leads the line may get a lot more service this coming year.

With Peterborough signing Cummings on loan for the coming campaign, it would appear that Rangers may not have needed to sign him permanently to bring him back for a second spell had they wanted to.

And with that potentially meaning that Rangers could have added to their options further without spending a significant sum – even if another loan is not ideal – perhaps Gerrard may be wondering whether he made the right call on Cummings if he fails to get another striker in before the window closes.
