Could Gerrard comments prompt Rangers to target another Liverpool ace?

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard hinted that new players could be coming into Ibrox in the future after the Gers’ semi-final defeat.

In very intriguing comments after the League Cup semi-final, Steven Gerrard told Rangers’ official website that the Gers could use the transfer market to improve their options up front after Umar Sadiq squandered his opportunity at Hampden Park.

Sadiq was poor as he made his full debut, and Gerrard’s comments certainly hint that he has his eye on further signings who could provide better competition for the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty.

“When we do get to this stage again, hopefully we will have better players in the final third that take us that step further,” he said on Sunday.

“If they are not there with us right now I will find them.”

In the wake of the defeat, his comments will probably please a large section of the Ibrox faithful. While Sadiq was handed an incredibly difficult task, he still managed to leave the fans frustrated despite expectations probably being incredibly low heading into the game.

Should Gerrard decide to look into the transfer market, it is likely that he will want a marquee name that should have no problem shining when the Gers get onto the big stage.

So perhaps Rangers fans should expect the Gers to make a new bid for Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke when the January transfer window opens.

As reported by the Daily Record, Gerrard wanted Solanke on loan in the summer and recently saw the striker – who earns £25,000-a-week at Anfield, according to Spotrac – up close when England and Scotland’s under-21s met.

Given how well Ryan Kent and Ovie Ejaria have performed since arriving from Merseyside, Gerrard would be forgiven for wanting to repeat the trick with Solanke. And when Liverpool consider how well the pair at Ibrox are developing, they may perhaps be more willing to let the forward join them for the second-half of the campaign.

Gerrard’s comments certainly hint that Rangers will already have one eye on strengthening their striker options in the January window. And given the previous links and the success that his teammates have enjoyed so far, perhaps it should surprise no-one if Solanke finds himself at the top of the Gers’ wishlist.
