Celtic fans were rocked by an update from Fabrizio Romano this week; the Italian reporting that Josip Juranovic is the subject of Premier League interest and could depart – could Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa be one of those clubs?

Signed for a bargain £2.5million (Sky) from Legia Warsaw by Ange Postecoglou last summer, the 26-year-old Croatia international has been excellent for the Hoops. An injury saw him miss the last few games of the season.

But he starred in his 35 league and cup appearances, as he fought with Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston for a place on either side of the defence. Said form has not gone unnoticed down south, according to Romano.

Indeed, Romano reports that he is expected to leave Parkhead in the coming months despite having four years left on his Celtic contract. The Italian says a move to the Premier League could occur this summer.

Juranovic could depart Celtic: Gerrard and Villa?

Gerrard will obviously keep a watchful eye of what is going in Scottish football. He is being linked with a move for his old club’s breakout star in Calvin Bassey – and is about to sign Rory Wilson from Rangers for £1million.

But Villa do lack a bit of depth in defence despite the signing of Diego Carlos. While Calum Chambers came in from Arsenal in January, they lack cover for Matty Cash and Lucas Digne at full-back.

Matty Targett has completed a permanent move to Newcastle. Ideally, Villa and Gerrard bring in a player comfortable on either side. Step forward, Celtic’s 20-time Croatia star Juranovic – a player Ally McCoist has said is “outstanding”.

While he might be happy at Celtic and first choice in a side set to complete in the Champions League – the lure of a bigger wage in the Premier League will also be tempting. If Villa move, he might end up going.
