Sunderland are chasing Hibernian striker Jason Cummings, so perhaps one of their former forwards is about to help them out.

A recent report in The Sun suggested that Sunderland boss David Moyes was plotting a £2 million bid for Hibernian striker Jason Cummings as he looks to build a squad capable of securing promotion from the Championship.

Understandably, Hibs boss Neil Lennon is unlikely to be willing to sanction a deal that sees his star striker depart Easter Road, but perhaps one former Black Cats flop is about to leave the path slightly clearer for his old club.

The Scottish Sun recently suggested that Anthony Stokes – who scored three goals in 36 league games in a disappointing spell with Sunderland – is potentially in line to join Hibs for a third time as they prepare for their return to the Scottish Premiership.

It may not be out of the question to suggest that Stokes’ return may perhaps tempt Lennon to reluctantly consider letting Cummings move on with The Scottish Sun suggesting that the 28-year-old will be allowed to come back on a free transfer, while the Sunderland target’s departure would likely see Hibs pocket a seven-figure fee to potentially invest in other areas of the squad.

If Stokes’ potential arrival did help Sunderland land Cummings, it would appear that Moyes’ men would have bagged one of the most exciting strikers in the Scottish game currently, with 55 goals coming across the last three seasons in the second tier.

If he could recreate something like that kind of form if he did secure a move to the Stadium of Light, then Sunderland would surely be in with a fantastic chance of securing promotion at the earliest opportunity.
