Former Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Andy Lonergan is joining Liverpool for their pre-season tour of the USA.
Not many Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers fans will have expected Andy Lonergan to accomplish much this season, as the goalkeeper did not have great spells at either the Whites or the Wanderers.
Lonergan had two spells at Leeds, and during his second stint at Elland Road in 2017-18, the 35-year-old was able to make only seven appearances in the Championship, according to WhoScored.
During his time at Wolves in 2016-17, the goalkeeper made nine starts and two substitute appearances in the Championship, according to WhoScored.
The goalkeeper parted company with Middlesbrough at the end of last season, but the 35-year-old is now joining Liverpool.
The former Preston North End goalkeeper is joining the Reds as part of their squad for their tour of the USA.
The Merseyside outfit’s first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker has yet to report back for pre-season training due to his involvement in the Copa America with Brazil, while youngsters Caoimhin Kelleher and Vitezslav Jaros are injured.
Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has explained the decision to bring Lonergan, and he has dropped hint that the goalkeeper could earn a contract.
Achterberg told Liverpool’s official website: “We need some cover in training so we thought we’d bring someone in who can help us [so we] don’t overload the goalkeepers in training.
“Basically we’re bringing him in for training and we can try to help him get fit and we’ll see how it goes from there. It’s like he helps us and we help him to get fit.”
