Celtic are a defender light having failed to sign a reinforcement during the summer transfer window.

Denmark's player Yurary Poulsen (R) eludes South Africa's Rivaldo Coetzee during their Rio 2016 Olympic Games First Round Group A men's football match at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in...

News that Rivaldo Coetzee had failed his medical due to a foot injury and a move from Ajax Cape Town to Celtic had been called off could hardly have been timed worse for Brendan Rodgers. The deal fell through just a few days before the transfer deadline, leaving Celtic with very little time to find an alternative.

As a result, the champions look a defender light heading into the rest of the season with midfielder Nir Bitton forced to drop into the back four due to injuries to Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko, not to mention the retirement of Kolo Toure.

And it’s not as if the free agent market boasts too many potential gems just holding out for a new club. Though, if Celtic are after a short-term fix, they could do worse than consider a player who knows the club better than most.

Kelvin Wilson spent two seasons at Parkhead between 2011 and 2013, winning the Scottish Premiership title on two occasions and making 76 appearances in all competitions.

Now, however, the 31-year-old is without a club after being released by Rotherham United following an injury-stricken season which resulted in just eight league appearances. On the upside, he cannot be blamed for a dreadful defensive record which saw The Millers relegated with 98 goals conceded.

And though Wilson would hardly improve Celtic’s first-team, he could be a valuable addition to the squad, adding depth and domestic experience to the one area of The Hoops’ squad that is somewhat lacking.

Wilson will be remembered fondly at Celtic for an impenetrable performance against Lionel Messi and co in that infamous 2-1 Champions League win against Barcelona in 2012.

Though such heights may be beyond him now, Wilson could still have a role to play in Glasgow.
