The Daily Mail recently reported that Celtic were one of the sides that were interested in signing Blackburn Rovers winger Connor Mahoney, but they were not favourites for his signature.

According to the Mail, Nottingham Forest are in pole position to sign the 20-year-old, while Wolves are also interested in the youngster who is set to leave Ewood Park for a compensation fee this summer with his contract expiring.

While Celtic are perhaps behind in the race to complete a deal, perhaps it is fair to say that the Hoops have a potential ace up their sleeve in the shape of one of Mahoney’s current teammates.

Charlie Mulgrew has played alongside Mahoney for Rovers this season, but also knows exactly what the youngster can expect if he decided to make the switch to Parkhead, having spent six years with the Hoops before leaving for Blackburn last summer.

Mulgrew enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with the Bhoys. And while he may still have been keen to encourage Mahoney to stay put if that was a potential option, the fact that the Mail suggests that he is likely to leave the club this summer may tempt the defender to try and sell the idea of making the switch to Celtic to the academy graduate.

And judging by some of the performances he has put in for Blackburn this past season, it would appear that Celtic fans will be grateful to Mulgrew if he can help steer him towards the Scottish Premiership champions.

The youngster started just four times in the Championship – making a further 10 appearances from the bench – and managed to contribute three assists for a side that ultimately had little to smile about.
