Leeds United reportedly want to bring Orlando City hotshot Cyle Larin across from the MLS – and Jo Inge Berget could help make a deal possible.
How on earth do you find a way to replace your all-time record goalscorer at the peak of his prolific powers? Well, in the eyes of Orlando City, by signing a former Celtic striker.
Swedish publication Expressen reports that Malmo frontman Jo Inge Berget will not extend his contract with the Allsvenskan champions – and is set to swap the Scandinavian chill for the distinctly warmer climate of Orlando, Florida.
Berget is due to become a free agent in December. And the Norwegian international, who scored twice in eight games for Celtic during a short-term loan spell in 2014/15, will have big boots to fill at Orlando with Cyle Larin seemingly set to depart.
Like Berget, the 22-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of this calendar year. After three seasons in the MLS, in which he became Orlando’s all-time record goalscorer with 44 goals in 89 games, Larin told The Sentinel that it is the ‘right time’ to make the move to Europe.
And this is fantastic news for Leeds United. The Sun on Sunday reported on September 10th that the Championship giants were hoping to give the Canada international a chance to prove that he can hit the net at an equally remarkable rate across The Atlantic.
Considering that Leeds’ bright start to the season has turned into a disaster with six defeats in the last seven games, signing a goalscorer as young and exciting as Larin would be a real pick-me-up for increasingly disillusioned supporters.
