Ouasim Bouy is perhaps the least memorable of Victor Orta’s many summer signings – but should not be written off just yet at Leeds United.
With the obvious exception of Samu Saiz, the majority of Victor Orta’s summer signings have flattered to deceive at Leeds United.
Though it’s a player currently spending the season away from Elland Road who has perhaps struggled the most. Former Dutch youth star Ouasim Bouy, who counts Ajax, Hamburg and Juventus on an eye-catching CV, moved to Leeds on a free in the summer before joining Spanish sister club Cultural Leonesa on loan.
Though it would be an understatement to say things haven’t exactly gone to plan. The 24-year-old featured in the final 11 minutes of the second tier side’s 2-0 defeat to Tenerife on Saturday.
That, however, was only his second appearance of the season. Bouy has spent most of his time at Leonesa either warming the bench or being omitted from the matchday squad altogether. This, then, does not bode too well for Bouy’s hopes of getting his nomadic career back on track at Elland Road next season.
Hope is not lost just yet, however.
After all, Bouy’s versatility could stand him in good stead in West Yorkshire. Bouy was signed as a central midfielder but can also play in the back four – which could come in handy for manager Thomas Christiansen, assuming he is still in charge by the start of next season.
Leeds’ hitherto solid defence has crumbled in a run of seven defeats in nine Championship games, conceding 17 goals in that time.
And a lack of depth at centre-half means Pontus Jansson continues to start despite his form dropping off a cliff while Conor Shaughnessy, formerly a central midfielder, has been forced to adapt to a new defensive position.
Bouy, then, could give Leeds some options – provided he adapts better to life in England than he has in The Netherlands.
