Leo Bonatini has scored for fun in Wolves colours but Nicolai Jorgensen could be the difference maker at Molineux.
The criticism of Paul Lambert’s Wolves side last season was that their spine left a lot to be desired. A defence with a habit of conceding porous goals combined with a less than prolific attack, it was hardly a recipe for a promotion challenge.
The same accusation cannot be levelled at this new, improved Wolves, however. Nuno Espirito Santo’s league leaders reinforced almost every area of their squad in the summer and now possess a solid goalkeeper, stronger centre-backs, a midfield boasting skill and steel and one of the league’s most in-form strikers in Leo Bonatini.
Though if there’s one area in Wolves’ impressive squad that could do with a little TLC in January, it’s up front. Brazilian striker Bonatini, who Wolves have an option to buy from loan club Al Hilal, has ten league goals this season and seven in his last seven games.
The 23-year-old, however, is the only senior and natural centre-forward on the club’s books. Wolves are an injury away from a potential crisis.
Though with The Mirror (page 48, November 15th) reporting that the Chinese-funded Black Country outfit are planning a January raid for Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen, it appears they are taking emphatic steps in the right direction.
Jorgensen, who started as Denmark smashed Ireland 5-1 on Tuesday to seal their place at the World Cup, looks like the missing piece in Wolves’ jigsaw on paper.
The 6ft 2ins targetman has been prolific since moving to Feyenoord from Copenhagen in 2016, scoring 21 goals and setting up a further 11 in 32 Eredivisie games last season.
Inspiring Feyenoord to their first league title since 1999, Jorgensen knows what it takes at the business end of the season – which could come in handy for a Wolves side aiming to return to the Premier League more than half a decade away.
