Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in Bilbao Athletic striker Gorka Guruzeta.
Tottenham may have only signed Fernando Llorente this past summer in a deal that The Sun reported at the time was worth £15 million, but with the Spaniard turning 33 next February, Mauricio Pochettino would be forgiven for having one eye on the future.
There is certainly no urgent need to replace the former Swansea man, especially with Harry Kane’s form limiting him to occasional opportunities right now – but Tottenham may still want to consider potential long-term replacements for Llorente.
And it appears that Spurs may be considering turning to one of Llorente’s former sides to fill the void that the veteran may leave behind in the coming years.
The Sun recently reported that Tottenham were one of the top flight sides were scouting Bilbao Athletic striker Gorka Guruzeta, who has been brilliant this term, and would have done his chances of earning a move to the Premier League no harm at all by scoring a wonderful goal in the game with Manchester United under-23 side which attracted the top flight scouts, including a representative from Spurs.
With Guruzeta out of contract in the summer, it appears that the situation surrounding his future will come to a head soon, and with Tottenham seemingly in the race, it may not be out of the question to suggest that they may attempt to have him signed ready to step up when it is time for Llorente to be replaced.
Guruzeta’s lack of top flight football suggests that he may not be ready to be Kane’s first understudy for a while, but if Pochettino brings him in and has him working with his teammates and learning from the likes of Llorente – who left Athletic one year before the 21-year-old’s arrival – perhaps he will have the quality to make the grade when Llorente steps aside.
