Could Fernando Llorente do what had seemed unthinkable at Spurs?

Fernando Llorente’s Tottenham Hotspur contract reportedly expires in the summer.

It has not been the easiest time for Fernando Llorente since he joined Tottenham. Understandably, it has proved to be an incredibly difficult task to be Harry Kane’s understudy.

That player cannot expect to enjoy many minutes on the pitch – apart from when Kane is injured – but needs to somehow fill the void that Kane leaves when called upon.

Llorente had certainly struggled. In fact, it appeared that Kane’s injury problems were the one thing that tempted Mauricio Pochettino to not sell the Spaniard in the January transfer window, with the London Evening Standard reporting that he was taken off the market despite his £100,000-a-week deal expiring in the summer.

But like several of his teammates, Llorente is now proving a lot of his critics wrong. And perhaps there is now a chance that the 33-year-old could do the unthinkable: earn a new contract at Tottenham.

Llorente has scored two goals and provided three assists in his last four appearances, including the final goal in the superb 3-0 win against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Of course, Llorente still only boasts one league goal this season. But only Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Kane have provided more assists in the Premier League this term, which is a remarkable statistic given that Llorente has only started three times.

In an ideal world, Pochettino would be able to bolster his options in the summer market. But given that Llorente is doing everything asked of him right now in that impact sub role, Tottenham surely need to consider keeping him around for one more year.
