Everton – in – and Aston Villa – out – have reportedly failed to push through transfers this week.
Everton appear to have been unsuccessful in their attempt to sign defender Jairo Riedewald from Ajax, with Crystal Palace closing in on an £8 million move according to The Daily Mail [11:39].
But another club’s transfer failure could present the Toffees with a fresh opportunity.

Sevilla had a similar deal in place to sign Jordan Amavi from Aston Villa, but pulled the plug earlier this week citing a failed medical.
The Spanish side’s excuse has since been disputed by Villa chairman Tony Xia, who accused someone on their side of ‘looking for a reason to sabotage the transfer’ [Birmingham Mail].
Despite being linked with a string of potential new additions this summer, free agent John Terry remains the Villans’ only arrival so far – albeit on wages of around £60,000 a week – and it would appear that Steve Bruce’s side are, to some extent, relying on Amavi’s sale to fund more deals.
But such perceived eagerness to offload the Frenchman could play into the hands of any club looking to sign him, who could look to test Villa’s resolve with lower offers than Sevilla’s.
Everton’s director of football Steve Walsh is bound to have come across Amavi on his many cross-channel expeditions with Leicester City, and the Toffees would be wise to explore the possibility after Brendan Galloway’s recent departure left them short on the left of their defence.
Amavi may have struggled to rediscover the form he showed prior to suffering cruciate ligament damage, when Arsenal were among the clubs linked with his services [Mail], but with Leighton Baines still going strong at 32 Everton don’t need him to be brilliant right away.

Still only 23, a spell as Baines’ understudy is not going to hurt Amavi, and could be the perfect pressure-free environment he needs to return to his best.
