Newcastle United were said to have moved on from signing Fabian Delph (Chronicle), but with Tom Cairney’s proposed move to St. James’ Park now looking unlikely, the Manchester City man could come back on to Rafael Benitez’s radar.
Newcastle have been linked with Delph for some time, but reportedly have other targets this summer.
Cairney was believed to be one of the Magpies’ top priority additions, following their promotion to the Premier League.
However, Fulham are determined to keep hold of Cairney, with Slavisa Jokanovic announcing that the Scottish international would not be leaving Craven Cottage this summer yesterday (Hull Daily Mail).
Newcastle could now be forced to look elsewhere, as Benitez looks to strengthen his midfield options.
And Delph looks to be one of the better players on Newcastle’s wishlist.
The England international may not have established a starting place for himself since moving to City, but he is a very reliable Premier League player.
And with City willing to sell at £12 million (The Sun), Newcastle my be wise to reconsider withdrawing from the race to sign the 27-year-old.
