Wolves want Derby County’s Chris Martin in January to complete their attack.
Sam Winnall did not make much of an impact during his formative years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Making his senior bow in an August 2010 League Cup tie against Southend United, that was the Wolverhampton-born striker’s only appearance in the famous old gold before being shipped out to Scunthorpe United.
Seven years on, however, Winnall could finally, and somewhat inadvertently, become rather useful to Wolves. Because it is his presence on loan at Derby County that could pave the way for Wolves to land their top January target, his Rams team-mate Chris Martin.
According to The Sun (3rd December, page 65), Wolves are keen to land the Scotland international in the New Year as manager Nuno Espirito Santo eyes a proven Championship goalscorer capable of firing the league leaders to promotion.
The report adds that Derby may be willing to sell – and Wolves could have Winnall to thank for that.
Because, since Winnall arrived at Pride Park on a season-long loan from Sheffield Wednesday, Martin has fallen to fourth choice in the pecking order, behind Matej Vydra and David Nugent too.
Martin has featured in 19 Championship games this season but only four of those have come from the start. And while he would hardly be a guaranteed member of Wolves’ first XI, at least Martin would only have Leo Bonatini ahead of him in the pecking order at Molinuex.
But if Derby had not landed former Wolves youngster Winnall in the summer, it would be far less likely that they’d be willing to cash in on Martin.
