Aston Villa are reportedly hoping to sign Sam Gallagher on loan from Southampton this summer.

Gallagher has established himself as a decent goalscorer at Championship level, having reached double figures during a spell with Blackburn Rovers and contributed a handful of goals with Birmingham City last season.
With Bruce needing to box clever in the transfer market, landing the 22-year-old on loan could be a shrewd investment – though Birmingham Live has suggested that the striker is keen to push for a chance at parent club Southampton this coming season.
But perhaps Gallagher’s mind may change in light of reports over the weekend, and perhaps it could ultimately be a player that Aston Villa wanted during the last January window who tempts him to consider another temporary move away from St Mary’s.

A few months later however, and Ings looks set to be offered the chance to thrive elsewhere at the highest level, with The Sun reporting over the weekend that Southampton are keen on the 25-year-old who Liverpool value at £20 million.

It must be mentioned that there appears to be a significant way to go before Ings joins Mark Hughes’ squad – The Sun suggests that Southampton are planning an offer of around £10 million – but if he arrives through the door, then it is difficult to imagine that Hughes will have many qualms about letting Gallagher leave.
So if Aston Villa do manage to get Gallagher in, perhaps Steve Bruce will have one of his recent striker targets to thank for paving the way for a deal to be done.
